Glenn R. Wichman, along with Michael Toy, conceived of the game of Rogue in Santa Cruz, California in 1980. If it weren't for Glenn and Michael, there would be no Roguelikes.

Additionally, Glenn is the author of a 7DRL called The Seven Day Quest, written for the 7DRL Contest 2007.

Glenn sometimes goes by the moniker "Capmango". There is a story behind this, but it is not interesting.

On March 10th, 2007, the dwellers of rec.games.roguelike.development were again challenged to write a new, complete, playable, roguelike in the scary span of just 168 hours. This was the fourth time such quest had been issued, and developers from all around the globe attended the call.

This time, twenty-two brave souls dared to challenge the impossible. Of those, eight have provided proof of their heroic deed. All of them, however, should be honoured for having taken on this challenge.
The Seven Day Quest was created during 7DRL Contest 2007.

The game follows Rodney as he agrees to try to retrieve the lost Amulets of the Six Real Planets and One Dwarf Planet before the Wentora Tourist Season begins, i.e. in one week.

The game is written Javascript and runs within a browser, so no download is necessary (though the source is available in a zip file for those who are interested).

There are (somewhat klunky) controls that allow you to balance a few key aspects of the game to make it harder or easier.

Features
*seven themed realms (Cave, Forest, Desert, Castle, Island, Ocean, Dream)
*"time" limit (actually number of moves limit)
*automatic save and restore on page load and unload

Neil: What are the technical requirements for entrants to this contest? Is one allowed to choose any language and libraries?

DarkGod: Yup
Every language, everyting, even existing game engines.

Neil: Engines? Oh that's too easy. It'd feel like cheating to whip up a ToME module and call it a new game, heh. Good to know, though!

DarkGod: Why? If you start from scratch it IS a new game. I dont consider recoding a LOS code or object handling code anything to be proud of, it's just a basic necessity IMO :)

Neil: There are opportunities for innovation everywhere, with UI in particular. It's fair, though, to say that writing a monster list, an item list, a combat system, a full set of character attributes, a magic system, a calendar, a dungeon or set of dungeons, a town or set of towns, an artifact list, and an ego item list give plenty of opportunities already. I proved that with ToMK. I'm guessing that's the first roguelike to do powerups the way it did.

I think what's got me calling it "easy" is that most of the work in writing a ToME module seems to be in data, not code. That's always been easy but very, very tedious for me. I guess people who have spent time studying the various algorithms involved in writing an engine might feel otherwise, though!

Jeff Lait: I have often said the hardest part about roguelike writing is data entry.

DarkGod: Well there are lots of modules that create completly new code too, it's not just about data ;)
I was thinking, maybe i'l ldo a kirsby like 7DRL ...

CapMango: When is someone going to organize another 7DRL contest? I'm keen to participate.
Capmangohttp://roguebasin.com/index.php?title=Talk:The_7DRL_Contest_(Initial_Manifest)&diff=4604Talk:The 7DRL Contest (Initial Manifest)2007-02-07T21:56:20Z
Capmango:
