Having sounds or music in a roguelike is rare. But not unheard of. For a developer creating his/her own sound or music can be hard. But there are some tools that could help a developer in creating their own sounds.

Tools

  • DrPetter's sfxr A tool to randomly generate sound effects using a few settings. Mostly useful for creating oldschool sound effects. (mac port: cfxr)
  • bfxr Another generation tool.

Free sound/music sources

When adding links, please make note of:

  • The license for using the sounds/music,
  • Any games that the sounds/music are designed specifically for,
  • The size & type (sound effects, music) & filetype (.wav .mp3) of the files.

Music

  • Kevin MacLeod - 320kbps MP3 files. Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license.
  • Roguebard - MP3 and Ogg Vorbis files. Non-commercial Creative Commons license.
  • Jamendo - MP3 files, Ogg Vorbis also available sometimes. A large variety of music, not all are suitable for use. Creative Commons licenses.

Effects

  • Freesound - Lossless formats (FLAC, WAV, AIFF). Various types of effects, not specifically created for games. Creative Commons Sampling Plus 1.0 license.
  • freesfx.co.uk - Various mp3s of music and sound effects free to use in games, as long as they are attributed.
  • NASA sounds on soundcloud, more sounds on archive.org - Various effects and sounds, all from space, and space related things. Free to use, if attributed. Other minor restrictions also apply.
