Nightmare Tyrant is a coffeebreak roguelike

Nightmare Tyrant is a 7 Day Roguelike game written for the 2013 7DRL Challenge set in a dark fantasy setting. You play the local hero, who must save his town from an insidious threat, a Nightmare Tyrant, which lurks in the dreams of the townsfolk and will consume their souls lest it is stopped. To accomplish that, your character will undertake up to five quests to weaken and finally destroy the tyrant. The game is non-linear - you can attempt to complete the quests in any order. There's no character advancement - instead, with each completed quest, the final level becomes easier. It can be attempted at any time, including right away. Beating it early increases the final score.

This roguelike was mainly intended as a test/showcase of an approach in which a roguelike is challenging without being also punishing. Apart from that, a multidimensional action resolution system makes both the player's and enemy attacks more interesting than the traditional "hit and roll damage" or "miss", but the potential of such a mechanic is far from fully tapped here.

There are two versions of the game available - original 7DRL version and Nightmare Tyrant Gold, which is a bugfixed and polished update of the 7DRL. You can download both from: download

The game has been created by modding my (zasvid's) other roguelike: Cosmic Commando
